Rutland, VT – February 2013. The Association for Retarded Citizens – Rutland Area members has changed its organization’s corporate name so it no longer contains the “R” word in it. After working with an ad-hoc committee, and hearing from Senator Peg Flory and self advocate Pebbles Stearling at our Annual Meeting, the vote was to no longer use the word “retarded” in our corporate name.
The Special Olympics started a campaign called, “Spread the Word to End the Word” in 2009, to rethink the gratuitous use of the “r-word” in every day slang. You can sign an on-line pledge not to use the word in a derogatory way at www.r-word.org . In 2010, the United States signed Rosa’s Law S.2781, which is working on taking out all languages in statutes with the “r-word” and using more respectful language like, intellectual disability. Finally, in 2011, the VT legislation passed Act 24, which also deals with respectful language. The Green Mountain Self Advocates worked hard in the state house to get the point across, it is time to change the language used in making laws and statutes that support us.
ARC Rutland Area has been our dba for over ten years, back then when the members started talking about the name change, they realized that funding was tied to our corporate name with the “R” word in it. We are confident that we have worked over the past years under our dba to inform the public of our changing name. Some of our newer members didn’t even know we had a corporate name, and were shocked to hear it when they did at the Annual Meeting.
