The Kiwanis Club of Rutland County is volunteering some time to promote the work of a group of adults living with Developmental Disabilities; the Aktion Club. In realizing the abilities of people with disabilities, they are working alongside the group to help them raise money for their community service projects.
Rutland, VT – August 10, , 2013. At the Ponderosa, in Rutland, on Route 7 South, from 11AM-2PM the Kiwanis Club volunteers will help wash cars to raise awareness and funds for the Aktion Club group. The club meets monthly to learn how to be more active in their community by giving back through service projects. Another topic taught is leadership. They have executive officers and all roles are carried out. The group wants to keep meeting monthly and learn ways to give back to the community. Each year the group raises money at this car wash. They turn those funds into their major goal, the garden. To a smaller degree they also fund a celebration of their accomplished goals.
This year the group has reached many of its goals, they’ve: met monthly, held project meetings, went bowling, collected & distributed $700 in their pet food drive, raise $250 for United Way, held their board meetings, cleaned Depot Station area, and visited a nursing home. The group is truly active and accomplishes what it sets out to do. You can call ARC for an Abilities Awareness workshop to be presented at your place of interest, see the Youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scg-QRw79LI, or see their longer Community Access TV production at http://vp.telvue.com/preview?id=T00969&video=146700.
The Aktion Club welcomes the support from the Kiwanis of Rutland County and encourages others to volunteer their support. Ask a member about the Self Advocacy group they also belong to, it is set up to provide opportunities to learn how to speak up for themselves and set goals, there is another whole list of goals that goes with that group!!
