For over 65 years, ARC has focused on equity and inclusion for those we serve.

Our mission is to “advocate for the right of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families to be regarded as valued citizens with the same entitlements as non-disabled individuals, including the right to lifelong opportunities for personal growth and full participation in the community.”

Our programs support our mission by providing opportunities for personal growth, community inclusion, and relationship building. Programs, services, and activities include: Representative Payee Service, Self Advocates Becoming Empowered Group, AKtion Club, Great Outdoor Initiative, dances/social events, and the Wing Center.

Our programs are open to all who want to participate at little to no cost. We currently serve a diverse group, ranging in age from 20 to 80+ with a wide range of disabilities, and their families in Rutland County and surrounding areas. Our objectives are to increase their mental health well-being, quality of life, and community inclusion.  Achieving these objectives entail several focused elements: advocacy, resources, community service, education, and social events. We strive to offer activities that are relevant to the current environment and they are adjusted in accordance with member surveys/questionnaires and community requests.

Intended program outcomes are: financial and housing stability from financial oversight and learning to budget – allowing them to live where they want as independently as possible in the community with dignity; learning to advocate for their own needs/desires – making their voices heard; having community service/participation opportunities which give them a sense of accomplishment, elevating their self-esteem and educates the community about their abilities; physical exercise/recreation, reduced isolation and loneliness, developing social skills, making friends, gaining a sense of belonging, and having fun.  All of which does not come easily to this population. The overall outcome is better physical and mental health.

ARC is the only organization in the area that provides these types of social programs and there is no federal funding and little state funding to support these programs.
